Fitting work around family life can be a real struggle. Add in a long, expensive commute, and it can seem like an impossible balancing act. This was the situation Lucy Elkin faced, before she started to work from home.

Lucy went on to found myworkhive, a job-board specialising in remote careers. myworkhive is also a social enterprise, developing free projects to support Mums — and others — to return to work.

Working from home inspired Lucy to start her online business. At Happity our whole team of parents also works flexibly from home, so we’re living proof that remote working can really work. Read on to find out Lucy’s top tips on working from home; and how you can decide whether it could be the flexible solution for you.

To mark #workthatworks week,  we’re lifting the lid on what flexible working means to us. Our Meet Team Happity blog series, shows just what a team of parents can achieve – without the 9 to 5.

Sara’s story, Founder of Happity

I started working on Happity…

I had the idea in 2015 when I was 7 months pregnant with my son and we’d moved house. It was only about 15 minutes away from where I’d had my eldest but I didn’t know where to find local baby and toddler groups in the area. I couldn’t believe there still wasn’t one great platform making this really easy for mums all over the country. At the time I didn’t know the first thing about tech and spent some time battling self-doubt (with a newborn baby!) before deciding it had to be done.  A year later, I’d retrained as a web developer and my son was ready to start nursery. I’d been exploring a number of startup ideas but there still wasn’t a great platform solving this particular problem, so I started building Happity then and it’s been an incredible journey since!

Lifting The Lid On How We Do #WorkThatWorks

When we started Happity, it was a core part of our mission to also create rewarding but flexible work that works around family life. While pursuing our aim of making those early days of parenthood easier, we’ve set out to make this project happen by working around our own children in a way that fits without sacrifices — either for our families or for ourselves. Because while being a mum might be the most important job of our lives, we’re also more than mums!

It’s now been 4 months since we launched as a public beta, so we thought it was time to introduce you to the members of Team Happity who are making it happen, and shine a light on exactly how ‘work that works’ actually works. We firmly believe there are ways to work around family that make sense for businesses and it’s up to us to prove it. Also, because we know how nice it is to have a good old nosy into other people’s day-to-day… #findyourhappity
