Description

Many new parents are not provided with sufficient information to advocate for their wishes during their birth experience. Many find themselves unable to ask questions and forced to make quick decisions without proper support or guidance.

In this session, we will cover topics including self-advocacy techniques, informed consent, informed refusal, patient autonomy and affirming healthcare. There will also be opportunities to ask questions and share experiences. By the end of the session you should feel better prepared to advocate for a safe and calm birth.

Safe Space Policy:

This session is open to women and birthing people as well as their partners - little ones are welcome too! The Broadwater Farm Community Centre is a breast/bodyfeeding safe space.

This session is open to all birthing people, including Black, brown, queer and trans people.

There is no pressure to show up with anyone else or participate in all of the discussions. Just show up, and make what you want of the session :)

If you have any questions about the event or venue please contact [email protected].

About the facilitator:

This session will be facilitated by Amisha Abeyawardene (they/she) a birthworker (doula) based in Haringey, North London providing support and advocacy to those navigating birth, parenthood and reproductive healthcare. Amisha is passionate about providing affirming and trauma-informed support to those most marginalised by the medical system, especially Black and brown, queer and trans people. Much of their work is informed by drawing upon South Asian practices and rituals to reconnect birthing people with traditional modes of healing.

Amisha is currently offering in-person support throughout the perinatal period, including prenatal education, birth support and postnatal healing.
