11 Egg-Cellent Easter Activities To Keep Toddlers Entertained

11 Egg-Cellent Easter Activities To Keep Toddlers Entertained

Looking for Inspiration and activities to keep a tiny army of toddlers entertained this Easter? We’ve got you covered.

Happy Easter!

While it’s a happy time of hopping about energetically for little bunnies, it’s also the time of year when the majority of preschools and childcare providers stops running for two weeks. Meaning that, for parents and carers, there’s very suddenly a lot of entertaining to do!

So how do you occupy a buzzing toddler or little one under 5 during the Easter break? We have a few ideas that might come in handy for you!

Biscuit Decorating

Easter Activities Toddlers: Image shows a plate with cutely decorated Easter themed icing

Buy a kit, or assemble your own. This is a simple (and delicious) way to let your little one explore their creativity and develop their motor skills. All you need is some biscuits (rich teas will do), some colourful icing sugar, and a select choice of toppings (your local supermarket will have plenty of variety). Then, go wild!

It might be a bit messy, but with a bit of newspaper or placemats laid out (or, if you’re really clever, get them to do all their decorating inside a baking tray so it catches all the sprinkles!), this should be a pretty stress-free activity.

Easter Egg Hunt

Easter Activities Toddlers: Two toddlers stand in a field holding Easter eggs and wearing bunny ears

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The classic Easter egg hunt is always a great activity for little ones. And there’s plenty of room to put your own personal touches on it.

It’s easy enough to get a hold of fillable plastic eggs (they’re currently being sold in packs of 5 for £1.25 in Tesco), so just fill them up with some treats that you know your kids love and hide them around the garden and the house. Exciting, reliable, and great fun.

If you’re looking for something a bit extra this Easter, you can also find an Easter egg hunt near you through the National Trust website. This is a great touch for if your kids are reaching the stages when they’re looking for a slightly bigger adventure.

Book An Easter Activity Through Happity

Class providers love running seasonal activities for babies and toddlers, and Easter is no exception!

Whether you’re looking for a music class, sensory play, baby massage, messy play or more -there’s a wide variety of classes out there. So see what tickles your fancy, and enjoy the tremendous amounts of effort that these classes put into making a seasonal themed class.

Check out the Easter Classes listed on Happity here!

Nest & Mini Egg Cakes

Easter Activities Toddlers: Image shows nest cakes with mini eggs

Another simple and wonderfully tasty activity that any toddler can get involved in. To make a nest and mini egg cake, all you need is a big bar of chocolate, cornflakes (or Rice Crispies if you prefer) cupcake paper cases and a bag of mini eggs.

Melt the chocolate in a bowl on top of some boiling water and stir regularly. After the chocolate is fully melted, pour over a bowl of cornflakes and leave to cool for about 5 or 10 minutes. Once cool enough to touch, scoop a handful into the cake cases and garnish with mini eggs in the top.

Once they’re all assembled, put in the fridge to cool, and then enjoy!

Have A “Sports Day” In Your Garden

Spring is here!

As long as the sun is shining and the garden is clear- this is a great opportunity to play some traditional outdoor games with the family. Gather anyone who’s interested, and run a mini Easter sports day. There’s plenty of ways to add an Easter spin on all the classics:

  • Easter egg & spoon race
  • Bunny-hop race (Optional: Add a cotton tail to an old pillow case for a little bunny sack-race)
  • Land the chick in the basket (Throw a soft toy in a hula hoop)

Use your imagination and see what you can come up with!

Tell Your Toddlers To Grab The Crayons And Print Some Easter Activities Sheets

What do you do when it’s raining outside or you need a bit of quiet time? Sometimes, the best option is to grab the pencils or crayons and work through a colouring book or do a bit of drawing. Or, alternatively, you can find a few printable sheets to fill up your kids time.

There’s tons of activity sheets out there that are easy enough to download and print. One of the biggest sites for this in the UK is Twinkl. Check them out, and see what might appeal to your little ones.

Find Out What’s On At Your Local Museums/Wildlife Trust

If you’re looking for something to entertain the kids over Easter weekend that takes you out and about, then it’s very likely that your local museums, zoos, libraries and community centres are running something.

We searched in London (as an example) and they had all sorts of events running, including a ‘Zoonourmous egg hunt’ at London Zoo. Search on Google or ask around in your local mum facebook groups.

Make Your Own Bunny Ears

Easter Activities Toddlers: Two kids stand peeking over a table wearing bunny ears

Download a template, or make your own! (We found this Peter Rabbit one from Penguin) What better way to enjoy Easter by making your own bunny ears and then hopping around your living room, living your best rabbit life. You might need to lend a helping hand with the scissors if necessary, but this is a good simple craft to get into the hoppity happity mood!

Egg Painting/Decorating

You can’t beat a classic activity like egg painting/decorating at Easter.

Grab the toddler-friendly paints (and some googly eyes if you’re up to it!) and a few eggs. It’s a good idea to hard boil your eggs ahead of time and leave them in the fridge to make them extra solid (and avoid just some of the mess that you could get from dropping raw eggs!) though there’s no hard rule if you haven’t.

Have fun!

Create a Nature Trail To Find The Easter Bunny’s Basket

While this is one that may take a little more prep, this is definitely a great one to get little ones enthusiastic about exploring the wild outdoors! Visit your local park and take a quick wander, making a note of the different kind of wildlife and nature that’s around you, and then simply make a list, or map out, where your little one needs to go to get closer to the Easter Bunny’s basket. (When your kids start to get a little closer, try to find a way to sneak a little basket or any kind of parcel with some treats inside in an area).

This can be good fun, and really exciting for little ones to get involved in. Woodland Trust have some great tips on how to make a nature trail for little ones here!

Give The Easter Bunny A Call

Ring ring! Hello? Is that your childhood calling?

Add a special little spark for your kids Easter weekend. We’re all familiar with the tradition of getting father Christmas to give your kids a ring on Christmas Eve, and if your little ones enjoy that, they’ll love this!

Go to the app store or the Playstore on your phone and search “Call Easter Bunny”. You should find an app that helps your little one talk with the childhood traditional icon. It’s a ready made recording, but the Easter bunny will say hello to your child, asks what their name is, and then remind them to keep behaving well. And it’s completely free!

25 Amazing Things To Do With Under 5’s In Nottingham -Happity Guide

Our city guide to Nottingham’s most-loved local classes, activities, parks, farms, businesses and services for babies, toddlers and parents

A Bit About Nottingham

Thanks to the familiar English folktales that we all grew up with, Nottingham is often associated with the famous Robin Hood and his merry men. Excitingly, you can still visit their hideout, “The Major Oak”, in Sherwood Forest, estimated to be between 800-1100 years old. Other than Robin Hood, Nottingham has an endless amount of hidden history and places to explore. Including the founding location of one of the UK’s biggest pharmacy retailer, “Boots”. Or the fact that Wollaton Hall was filming locations for one of the most famous masked heroes of all time (The Batman himself) in “The Dark Knight Rises”.

Known for having lots of “proper” villages around and a strong sense of community, it’s not that surprising that so many people are choosing Nottingham to raise their families. We wanted to know some of the best picks of things to do in the area, and reached out to the young families of Nottingham. After receiving many many many recommendations, we gathered together a list of  activities, destinations and services for you and your little ones.

We firmly believe that nobody knows their community better than the parents and carers pounding the pavements every day, so if there’s anywhere on here we’ve missed, let us know – we’re always keen to hear about great classes, activities and businesses for babies and toddlers. Better still, if you’re a class provider, we would love to feature you in our listings – you can sign up below.

When your baby starts to develop their 5 senses

When your baby starts to develop their 5 senses

From pregnancy through to early life, when does your baby start to develop their 5 senses?

We talk a lot about the importance of sensory toys, classes and activities to help your little ones develop and grow. Sensory development takes up a lot of early childhood, and there’s lots we can do to help them learn. But when does that development naturally begin? When will your baby begin to see, hear, smell touch and taste? And what will your baby pick up on their own?

We were curious, and we’re sure you are too, so we did a bit of research and this is what we found.

Sight

The 5 senses for a baby: to demonstrate Sight, this image shows a baby looking humorously startled while wearing a pair of glasses.

The development of sight begins within the womb. It may not be much, and it will be incredibly dark, but in your third trimester of pregnancy, your baby will start to be able to detect light and begin to make out shapes. According to Parents.com, They may even start to see their own arm and leg movement depending on your body type.

Once your baby is born, their sight still won’t be perfect. They will have incredibly blurry vision, as Newborns can only really see that which is around 10 inches away from their face. They also won’t quite be able to understand colours yet, seeing everything in different shades of grey.

However, their eyes adapt quickly, and by 2 months, they can see a further distance and will be able to see all the colours of the rainbow.

As their sense of sight continues to mature, babies will start to track moving objects and eventually develop depth perception. By 6 months, they can see objects in three dimensions and begin to understand spatial relationships.

Sound

To demonstrate sound, this image shows the back of a baby's head, mostly focussing on the ear.

According to Healthychildren.org, an unborn baby will start to hear noises around their mother’s body, (including their heartbeat) at around 18 weeks. About ten weeks after that, they’ll then start to hear some noises just outside of your body, like your voice. It explains why newborn babies find their mother’s heartbeat and voice so comforting, doesn’t it?

Unsurprisingly (as they start to develop their hearing as a fetus), babies are born with the ability to hear, but it’s not all there yet. Newborns can recognize their mother’s voice and other familiar sounds, but they won’t understand what you’re saying. They can also be easily startled by loud or unexpected noises (though this might still be incredibly relatable for us parents too…).

As their hearing improves, babies will start to turn their head towards sounds and respond to their name. By 6 months, they can distinguish between different tones, pitches and can even recognize simple words.

Smell

The 5 senses for a baby: to demonstrate smell, this image shows a baby curiously smelling at a bouquet of flowers

Your baby’s sense of smell will begin to develop around your third trimester of pregnancy, when they start to pick up on the smells of the foods you eat.

Newborns have a well-developed sense of smell and can recognize familiar scent- like their parents! Their parents’ scent is comforting, so you might notice them turn their head toward you and start moving their mouth (as if nursing), or simply to use you as a sense of comfort to stop crying.

Over time, babies become more sensitive to different scents and can differentiate between pleasant and unpleasant smells. By the time they are 6 months old, you should be able to notice them having preferences over smells they like and dislike.

Taste

To demonstrate taste , this image shows a baby looking up to their mother while bottle-feeding

According to this article by Baby Center, your fetus will start to develop their taste buds as early as 8 weeks old! But, even though this is when they start developing, they won’t be transmitting any tastes yet as the nerves are still in development. This will start to happen around 30 weeks however, when babies can start to taste the foods that are flowing in your bloodstream.

Newborns have a preference for sweet tastes, and they can differentiate between taste (mostly between sweet and sour). This may be a natural effect, as it often means that babies are drawn to breastmilk or formula. However, their sense of taste is not fully developed at birth, and it takes time for them to develop a taste for different foods.

It is recommended that babies are introduced to solid foods between 4 and 6 months of age, at which point they can begin to explore and develop their taste preferences.

Touch

The 5 senses for a baby: to demonstrate touch, this image shows a baby hand holding an adult's forefinger.

Similar to their sense of taste, a fetus will start to develop their sense of touch at around 8 weeks old. It makes sense that touch is one of the first of the 5 senses to get your baby started, as it will be one of the first ways to connect them with you! Starting around their mouth, and then over the following weeks more and more of the head. By the time they are 14 weeks old, most of their head should have developed a sense of touch.

As so much development is done in the womb, a newborn baby’s sense of touch is highly developed at birth. They can feel different textures, temperatures, and pressures, and they use this sense to explore their environment. Touch is also an essential part of bonding and attachment between a baby and their caregiver. Through touch, a baby can feel comforted, safe, and loved.

During their first few months, your baby will be exploring different textures of foods and materials, and by 6 months, you’ll struggle to stop your baby from grabbing and exploring everything within reach. Their curiosity will known no bounds (and neither will their grip!)

22 Family-Friendly Things To Do In Manchester -Happity Guide

Our city guide to Manchester’s most-loved local classes, activities, parks, farms, businesses and services for babies, toddlers and parents

So what is Manchester well known for?

Manchester is a city filled to the brim with rich history. It was the starting point of multiple revolutions (including the industrial revolution and the suffragette movement) is (and has) been a prime filming location for shows like peaky blinders & The Crown, and is the birthplace for tons of household names (Including Ian Mckellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, and bandmembers of Oasis).

The area is rich with culture, and buzzing with life. Listed by comparethemarket as one of the UK’s best locations to raise a family, a lot of its population is made up of young families. When it comes to having fun in the Manchester area, the very youngest members of the population (and their carers) have their pick of things to do. So, after receiving many many many recommendations, we thought we’d hone in on some of the most-loved activities, destinations and services for little ones.
